I’ve scoured the web to find 50+ of the best vegan Chinese recipes. From dumplings to noodles to soups to tofu, there's something here for you!

Chinese takeout is often a go-to when we need something quick and delicious on a busy weeknight. In addition, most restaurants offer a multitude of vegetable, rice and noodle dishes that would make ordering takeout seem like a safe bet for vegans.

Unfortunately, you can’t be so confident that those veggie dishes are actually vegan-friendly as many sauces are made with chicken stock or oyster sauce, and those noodles and wonton wrappers might have egg in them.

Fortunately, it isn’t hard to make some of your Chinese favourites at home. It may not be as quick as picking up the phone and ordering, but it will surely quench your craving for Chinese takeout while ensuring that your food is 100% vegan, healthier, cheaper and made exactly how you like it.

If you’re serious about making Chinese food at home on the regular, it’s worth it to seek out some of the more “specialty” ingredients for the most authentic flavour. Things like black bean paste, black vinegar, Shaoxing wine, vegetarian oyster sauce and Sichuan peppercorns can be found in Asian supermarkets, supermarkets with a well-stocked “ethnic” foods aisle or bought online.

Not every recipe listed below calls for specialty ingredients, however. Many are made with ingredients you probably have in your pantry already! Furthermore, some of the recipes offer substitutes for the more hard-to-find ingredients that will work in a pinch.

There are many excellent food blogs out there that specialize in Chinese cuisine or have an extensive catalogue of Chinese recipes. Some of them even have a vegan category!

I’ve scoured the web and chosen 50+ of the best vegan Chinese recipes and listed them below. The recipes are a mix of authentic Chinese, Chinese-American and Chinese-inspired and they all look absolutely delicious!

Finally, if you’re a real fan of Chinese food, I highly recommend the cookbook (affiliate link) The Chinese Vegan Kitchen by Donna Klein. It contains over 225 easy yet authentic recipes from the various culinary regions of China. Well worth it!
