I truly don’t know what I’d do without my parents. I know, I know, this post is about a fried mushrooms recipe, but a gal has to praise her parents every chance she gets when they’re as good as mine.

When I’m having a bad day or celebrating a special occasion, I usually get the phone call,

What are you doing tomorrow night?

I’ve known them long enough that I know it means they want to cook and feed us something GOOD! (Have I mentioned that “food is love?” Well it comes honest from my parents.)

Deep Fried Mushrooms

A few months ago, the phone call was made, and we were invited down for my FAVORITE meal ever. Fried deer meat, mashed potatoes, and white gravy. Then my dad added in a little extra surprise… deep-fried mushrooms.

Holy moly. When I watched him make this fried mushroom recipe, I realized I had been missing out on a delicious side dish, because I thought they would be hard to make.

Easy Side Dish Recipe

To my surprise, they’re possibly one of the easiest fried side dishes ever. So when I asked him how to make them, and what spice(s) he used for the breading… I was HOOKED when he told me all that it was.

“That’s it?”

So I picked up a carton of sliced mushrooms the next time I was at the store, and whipped these up for you all, so you can make them too!

Can you Use Button Mushrooms?

You can! But we personally don’t like button mushrooms because of the texture when you bite in to them. The sliced mushrooms make them easier to eat and give you that “crispier, crunchier” texture rather than the “bursting with juices” texture that the button mushrooms have.

How to Wash Mushrooms

Did you know you’re not supposed to soak mushrooms? They’ll absorb water, and you sure don’t want that for taste/frying.

Just wipe or lightly rinse with cool water and pat dry. (Better yet, if you have time, wash them early and let air dry after you pat dry too… just so there is little chance of any water remaining on the mushrooms.)

Ingredients

  • Seasoned salt
  • Flour
  • Oil
  • Sliced Mushrooms

That’s it. The seasoned salt was super tasty in the flour breading and made a big difference. But feel free to use a different seasoning.
Some seasoning options to consider are:

You’ll start by combining flour and seasoned salt in a bowl or ziptop bag.

Heat your oil in a pan over medium heat and once oil is ready, add in your mushrooms and cook for 2-3 minutes (flipping if necessary) until golden brown.

Mmmm… looks at those tasty little fried morsels.

Eating these mushrooms by themselves is how we eat them but they’d also be amazing alongside chipotle sauce!

Thinking “Inside” the Box

Until I saw my dad do this, I never even thought to purchase sliced mushrooms in the store and fry them. I always just assumed fried mushrooms had to wait until morels were ready in the woods, or I had to have fried mushrooms at one of my favorite restaurants!

I’m so glad that I can make these at home now!

FAQs

What is the secret to crispy mushrooms? ›

First, make sure the mushrooms are completely dry, then cook them in a hot skillet with some oil or butter as you normally would. Wait until you take them off the heat to shower them with a sprinkle of salt. This seems like a really small thing, but it actually makes a big difference.

Is it best to fry mushrooms in butter or oil? ›

Sautéed mushrooms with butter have their benefits, but so do sautéed mushrooms with olive oil. I use both oil and butter for a dynamic duo that pairs searing (oil) with rich, satisfying flavor (butter). (I also use both in my Sauteed Spinach.)

What is the best oil for frying mushrooms? ›

The best type of oil for frying mushrooms is one with a high smoke point, such as vegetable oil, canola oil, or grapeseed oil. These oils can withstand high temperatures without breaking down and imparting unwanted flavors to the mushrooms.

How do you fry mushrooms without them getting soggy? ›

Mushrooms are mostly water. You have to drive that water out to concentrate their flavor and prevent them from being mushy. Sautéing them in hot oil, getting them nicely browned and cooking them until they are dry will give you the best results. Once you've done that, you can use them however you like.

What enhances the flavor of mushrooms? ›

They work well with simple seasonings like salt and pepper but can take on a whole new dimension when you add ingredients like garlic, butter, and fresh herbs. Basic cooking techniques, flavorful ingredients, and a few tips and tricks can help add more flavor to mushrooms without a lot of fuss or stress.

Is it better to fry mushrooms on low or high heat? ›

Heat the oil or butter in the pan on a medium-high heat. Wait until it's sizzling, then add the mushrooms to the pan. Add the mushrooms and let them cook without stirring. Try to resist any stirring for the first 5 minutes.

What should we not do before cooking mushrooms? ›

Do I need to wash the mushrooms before I cook them? Never wash mushrooms. Instead, Wipe off any dirt with a damp paper towel. You can wash them but they won't be as good in texture/color.

Should you season mushrooms when frying? ›

The wider size gives me more room. Salt your mushrooms at the end: I know this seems odd, but mushrooms are one of the only things I salt towards the end of cooking. Salt brings out moisture, which, in the case of mushrooms, prevents them from browning in the pan.

Do mushrooms need to be washed before frying? ›

The Best Way to Wash Mushrooms

The critical step is to wait to wash them until right before you cook with them so they don't get bogged down with water. After giving the mushrooms a rinse, dry them off, and you're ready to cook.

Why should mushrooms be cooked in water before oil? ›

Sautéing them in oil first is a crucial mistake when cooking with mushrooms, as the oil will disappear, so you'll add more but then be left with soggy, oil-logged mushrooms. Cooking the mushrooms in water -- although counterintuitive and unconventional -- solves the problem of soggy mushrooms.

How do you keep mushrooms from getting watery when frying? ›

Use the widest pan you can to maximize evaporation while you fry them, also, you can put them in a very low oven for an hour to draw some of the moisture out. Don't crowd the pan, make sure each one has some space. Also, don't wash them in water before cooking! Mushrooms are sponges, they absorb liquids.

What does baking soda do to mushrooms? ›

Does baking soda kill mushrooms? No, it does not kill mushrooms but halts their growth. Sprinkling baking soda over the mushrooms in your mulch can help reduce their spread, as well as provide a pH buffer that may discourage further growth.

How do you keep dried mushrooms from getting chewy? ›

Some call for pouring hot water over the mushrooms, but that hurried soak results in weirdly chewy-hard mushrooms that look ok but are difficult to eat. For deep flavor, the most aroma, and super luxurious texture, rehydrate dried shiitakes in water for at least 6 hours (I've let them soak for up to 24 hours).
