Super Bowl staples were recalled because of a listeria outbreak effecting seven-layer bean dip, chicken enchiladas, cilantro salad dressing and taco kits.

Of 22 patients interviewed, 73 percent reported eating queso fresco, cotija, or other similar cheeses. Epidemiologic and laboratory data showed that queso fresco and cotija cheese made by Rizo-López Foods made people sick in this outbreak. Many foods including cheeses, crema, and yogurts were recalled.

A sweeping recall of cheese and other dairy products linked to a lethal listeria outbreak is expanding to include ready-to-eat enchiladas, snacks, dips, dressings, wraps, salad and taco kits sold at major retailers including Amazon, Costco, Sprouts Farmers Market, Trader Joe's and Walmart.

The latest recall is of the Chicken Street Taco kit with a UPC number of 205916414990 and a best-by date between November 29, 2023 and March 4, 2024.

Product recalls explained

The 350g Old El Paso Hard n Soft Taco Kit was recalled due to some kits containing a sachet, labelled Ckn Ndle, that was found to have an undeclared milk allergen.

The recalled products include cheese, yogurt, and sour cream sold under the brand names Tio Francisco, Don Francisco, Rizo Bros, Rio Grande, Food City, El Huache, La Ordena, San Carlos, Campesino, Santa Maria, Dos Ranchitos, Casa Cardenas, and 365 Whole Foods Market.

Higher-risk people other than pregnant women: Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Pregnant women: Pregnant women typically experience only fever, and other non-specific symptoms like chills and headache.

Listeria infection is a foodborne bacterial illness that can be very serious for pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with weakened immune systems. It's most commonly caused by eating improperly processed deli meats and unpasteurized milk products.

Given the severity of listeriosis and its high death rate, it is important to keep food free from Listeria. Dairy products such as soft cheese, raw milk, raw milk cheeses, and ice cream have been identified as sources of Listeria monocytogenes in recent outbreaks.

The four menu items that have officially been discontinued are: the chipotle ranch grilled chicken burrito, beefy melt burrito, fiesta veggie burrito, and classic combo. B&G Foods announced today it is voluntarily recalling 3,867 cases of 23 oz. Tone's Taco Seasoning Blend, with “best by” dates of SEPT 03 24 and SEPT 06 24, due to the presence of undeclared wheat.

Taco kits, unopened and kept in a cool, dry place, usually last between six to nine months past the 'best by' date printed on the package. Once you've opened the kit, the shells, if kept in a sealed bag, can stay fresh for one to two weeks. The seasoning, if unopened, can last between two to three years.

Past listeriosis outbreaks in the U.S. have been linked to raw, unpasteurized milks and cheeses, ice cream, raw or processed vegetables, raw or processed fruits, raw or undercooked poultry, sausages, hot dogs, deli meats, and raw or smoked fish and other seafood.

There are a few key things that spark most recalls and outbreaks. Most commonly known, salmonella can be found in most of the items on the top 10 list, including deli meats and cheeses, ground beef, onions, turkey, chicken, papayas, peaches, cantaloupe, and flour.
